As Kerala's anti-drug operations intensify, traffickers are reportedly using drop points, friends' SIM cards, third-party bank accounts and covert delivery methods to evade detection.

Kochi: As Kerala's anti-drug enforcement drive, such as Operation Toofan and the Excise Department's Operation Thunder, tighten the net around drug networks, dealers are reportedly adopting new strategies to continue distribution while staying off the radar of investigators.
Authorities say traffickers are moving away from traditional hand-to-hand transactions and are relying on covert delivery systems, third-party financial channels and temporary communication networks to evade surveillance.
Use of SIM cards and bank accounts
Officials have noticed attempts by some suspects to distance themselves from transactions by using SIM cards registered in the names of friends or acquaintances. Financial trails are allegedly being diverted through bank accounts belonging to girlfriends or close associates, making it harder for investigators to directly link payments to the actual suppliers.
Online delivery workers being exploited
Some networks are reportedly experimenting with using online delivery personnel to move packages.
Drug networks using 'drop points' for deliveries
One of the emerging trends identified by enforcement agencies is the use of so-called "drop points" for drug distribution. Instead of meeting buyers directly, suppliers allegedly hide narcotics at pre-decided locations and share the exact spot through messages or coded instructions.
Small quantities are reportedly concealed in places such as tree hollows, under park benches or in isolated public areas. Overgrown plots, deserted locations and low-traffic zones are often preferred to reduce the risk of being caught. Investigators say traffickers may monitor the area from a distance to ensure the package is collected as planned.
Wholesalers keeping lower stock levels
Law enforcement sources say major suppliers have become more cautious following intensified inspections and arrests. Wholesalers are believed to be holding smaller quantities of narcotics than before to reduce losses in the event of a raid or seizure.
Interstate routes under watch
Trafficking networks continue to source synthetic drugs from cities such as Bengaluru, Goa, Mumbai and Delhi. To move contraband into Kerala, intermediaries are allegedly recruited and paid hefty commissions.
Officials suspect that handovers sometimes take place during brief stops at traffic signals and busy junctions, allowing couriers to exchange packages within seconds. Communication and coordination are largely managed through mobile phones until the transfer is completed.
