Thrissur, Kerala: A leadership meeting of the Kerala Congress in Irinjalakuda turned violent, with rival groups exchanging blows and hurling objects at each other. A police officer was among those injured in the clash.

The confrontation reportedly broke out between supporters and opponents of Kerala Congress leader and MLA Thomas Unniyadan. Hot tea brought for the meeting was allegedly thrown during the altercation.

The incident took place while a reception was being organised for Unniyadan in Thrissur. Meanwhile, another faction of the party was holding a meeting at a private residence. Supporters of Unniyadan later arrived at the venue, claiming that they represented the official faction of the Kerala Congress (Joseph).

This led to a heated argument that soon escalated into a physical confrontation. Several party workers were injured, while a police officer also sustained injuries.

Those attending the leadership meeting alleged that people who were under the influence of alcohol had created the ruckus. Women party workers were also among those injured.

One woman worker was allegedly injured after a fan was hurled during the clash. The injured were taken to hospital for treatment.

Unniyadan has been at odds with the party leadership, alleging that he was not considered for either a ministerial position or the post of chief whip.
