Thiruvananthapuram: From now, Kashmiri carpets and shawls will have a Kerala touch! A company in Kerala has developed a software to digitise Talim, the symbolic inscriptions used by traditional weavers in Kashmir to make carpets and shawls, with the help of artificial intelligence. The software was developed to retain and preserve the traditional Talim codes and use them precisely on carpets.
The technology was developed by International Virtual Assistance Pvt. Ltd., operating in Technopark. The Talim software will create machine learning models using artificial intelligence to reconstruct the codes. Along with this, distinct Talim codes can be generated with more clarity by feeding picture data into the software.
Customers often approach weavers with designs on their mobile phones, often creating difficulty for the weavers to recognize them.
Once these are digitised, it will help reduce manual labour and increase the availability of carpets with precise designs and accuracy. 
The project was implemented under the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT) in collaboration with the Agni Mission of the Central Government in 2023.
What is Talim?
Talim is a weaving method followed by the traditional weavers of Kashmir. It contains instructions on carpet weaving. It consists of codes and inscriptions in a special script similar to that of palm leaves.
The Talim content includes the carpet's color and design, and methods on how the threads have to be weaved. They weave the carpets, singing the information mentioned in the Talim in a special rhythm. It takes around three to six months to weave a carpet using the traditional method.
