Kochi: The Kerala state treasury received ₹20,892.26 crore from stamp duty and registration fees over the past four years, according to data from the Inspector General of Registration (IGR) office.

Of this, ₹15,327.51 crore came from stamp duty, while registration fees accounted for ₹5,564.75 crore during the period between FY 2021–22 and FY 2024–25. The revenue was generated through the registration of land, buildings, flats and commercial properties across the state.

At present, 315 sub-registrar offices operate in Kerala to handle document registrations. The data also revealed that 4,859 people prepared and registered property deeds on their own during this period, as per information released to RTI activist M.K. Haridas.

However, widespread complaints persist that document writers in the state are charging more than the government-prescribed fees. As per rules, for property deeds valued above ₹8 lakh, the maximum service fee should be ₹10,000. But many document writers reportedly charge higher fees based on the total value of the property.
