Alappuzha: The rate of Cesarean deliveries (C-sections) has exceeded 50% in five districts of Kerala. Alappuzha, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Ernakulam lead the list, with Alappuzha topping at 56%. Kasaragod has the lowest rate at 34%. The state average stands at 44%.

The statistics were revealed in a report by the National Health Mission (NHM) based on data from April to November 2024.

Medical professionals attribute the rising rate to the reluctance of doctors to promote natural childbirth, as they are often held accountable in case of maternal or neonatal complications. To avoid emergencies, many doctors reportedly prefer recommending C-sections over normal deliveries.

Recently, a controversy arose at the Women and Child Hospital in Alappuzha's Kadappuram after complaints that babies born via vacuum-assisted delivery were left with impaired arm movement. This has increased concerns that doctors are encouraging more C-sections. Adding to the trend, pregnant women and their families are often found supporting the option of cesarean delivery.

Experts also suggest that the rising rates in districts with fewer high-risk pregnancies could be linked to the overall cautious approach of healthcare providers. In Alappuzha district, 11% of pregnant women were identified as being in the high-risk category.

Taluk hospitals reluctant to take on high-risk cases

Some taluk hospitals are reportedly unwilling to handle high-risk pregnancies. In such cases, patients are commonly referred to medical college hospitals for further care.
