Palakkad: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has announced its candidates for the upcoming by-elections in Palakkad, revealing that Dr P Sarin, who was the KPCC Digital Media Convener until two days ago, will contest as an independent left candidate. UR Pradeep, a former MLA, will also run for the CPM in Chelakkara. The announcement was made by CPM State Secretary M.V. Govindan at a press conference.
The need for by-elections in Palakkad and Chelakkara arose following the election of Shafi Parambil and K Radhakrishnan to the Lok Sabha.
It had been widely expected that Dr Sarin would be the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate. Things took a dramatic turn when Rahul Mamkootathil, the state president of the Youth Congress, was declared the UDF candidate, prompting Dr Sarin to distance himself from the party. His public announcement of dissent during a press conference had indicated a shift towards the left front. Following this, he was expelled from the Congress party.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, Sarin contested as the UDF candidate from the Ottapalam constituency but was defeated by K. Premkumar of the CPM.
UR Pradeep, the former MLA from Chelakkara, is a member of the CPM area committee. He won the constituency in 2016 but vacated it in 2021 for K Radhakrishnan. Ramiya Haridas, a former MP from Alathur, is set to contest for the Congress. In the last Lok Sabha elections, she was defeated by K Radhakrishnan.
