Kerala: Amid ongoing controversy surrounding the boycott of L2: Empuraan, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, Kerala BJP State President Rajeev Chandrasekhar has taken to X to express his disappointment with the film’s content.
In his post on Sunday, Chandrasekhar, who had previously expressed his intention to watch the film, shared his concerns after learning about changes made to Empuraan. He added that the makers had implemented 17 cuts in the movie, leading to a re-censorship process. This development, he said, was in response to controversies surrounding the film’s content, which he claimed disturbed fans of Mohanlal and other viewers.
Chandrasekhar, who had watched and enjoyed the first film, Lucifer, said, "I had watched Lucifer and liked it. I had said that I would watch the movie Empuraan when I heard it was a sequel to Lucifer. But now I have come to know that the makers of the movie themselves have made 17 edits in the movie and that the movie is undergoing re-censorship.."
He further added, "A movie should be watched as a movie. it can't be seen as history. Also, any movie that tries to build a story by distorting the truth is doomed to fail."
Chandrasekhar made it clear that, despite his prior interest in the sequel, he would not be watching Empuraan now due to his disapproval of its approach. "So, will I watch this sequel to Lucifer? No. Am I disappointed by this type of moviemaking? - Yes," he concluded.
This statement came after the BJP leader had initially posted a message on Facebook, wishing the team of Empuraan, including Mohanlal and director Prithviraj Sukumaran, success. However, his wishes were met with backlash, leading to cyberattacks against the film. Chandrasekhar later clarified that Mohanlal is a close friend and that his message was simply an expression of congratulations, not an endorsement of the film’s content.
The controversy surrounding Empuraan has intensified in recent days, with fans, critics, and political figures engaging in heated debates over the film’s themes and portrayal of certain events.
