Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Assembly held a tribute session on Tuesday to honor the legacy of Malayalam literary giant MT Vasudevan Nair, former state minister M T Padma, and ex-MLA K Muhammadunni Haji, who passed away last year.
Speaker A N Shamseer led the session, remembering the significant contributions of these three individuals to Kerala's society and culture. The assembly observed two minutes of silence in their memory before beginning the day's proceedings.

MT Vasudevan Nair: A literary icon
MT Vasudevan Nair, widely known as MT, passed away on 25 December 2024, at the age of 91. He had been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Kozhikode after heart failure. MT was an influential figure in Malayalam literature, having authored nine novels, 19 collections of short stories, and numerous essays and memoirs over his seven-decade career.
His work earned him the prestigious Jnanpith Award in 1995, India’s highest literary honor, along with several other accolades such as the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, and the Vayalar Award. MT also received the Padma Bhushan in 2005, one of India’s highest civilian awards.
Padma: A former minister, senior Congress leader
Former Kerala Minister M T Padma passed away on 12 November 2024, at the age of 81 in Mumbai due to age-related health issues. She had a notable political career, serving twice as the elected representative of the Koyilandy Assembly constituency. From 1991 to 1996, Padma was the Minister for Fisheries, Rural Development, and the Registration Department in the UDF government.
K Muhammadunni Haji: A former MLA, IUML leader
K Muhammadunni Haji, former MLA from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), passed away on 18 January 2025, at his home in Pookottur, Malappuram district. He was 82. Haji represented the Kondotty seat in the Kerala Assembly for two terms, in 2006 and 2011.
These tributes reflect the lasting impact of MT Vasudevan Nair, M T Padma, and K Muhammadunni Haji on Kerala's cultural, political, and social landscape.
