Kerala Minister R Bindu clarifies the government`s stand on the KEAM exam weightage controversy following the High Court verdict. Cabinet to decide next steps

Thiruvananthapuram: Minister R Bindu stated that the government’s only objective is to ensure justice for all students. Speaking to the media, the minister clarified that the High Court verdict has not yet been officially received and that the cabinet will take an appropriate decision after reviewing the controversy surrounding the KEAM exam weightage issue.
“We have not received the court order yet. Once it is received, the cabinet will discuss and decide the next steps. There is also an option to appeal. A formula that ensures fairness to all students was implemented, especially considering the 35-mark gap seen in last year’s standardisation process. For instance, even a student who secured full marks under the Kerala syllabus could lose up to 35 marks due to the old system,” said Minister Bindu.
She added that the revised formula was introduced only after cabinet approval, with full transparency. “There is no vested interest here only a desire to ensure justice for all children,” she emphasised.
The High Court recently annulled the results of the KEAM entrance exam for professional courses in Kerala, including engineering, citing that the revised subject weightage system was not legally valid. The verdict, delivered by Justice D K Singh, was in response to petitions claiming that the new 5:3:2 subject weightage formula unfairly affected students from the CBSE syllabus.
The decision has been seen as a blow to students under the Kerala state syllabus, especially since it comes just ahead of the admission process. The revised weightage formula was originally introduced to address the perceived disadvantage faced by state syllabus students in comparison to those from other educational boards.
