Thrissur: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has won all seats in the election to the governing body of the Karuvannur Cooperative Bank, where one of the largest alleged frauds in Kerala’s cooperative sector was reported.

Polling was held for 11 seats, while CPM candidates had earlier been elected unopposed in two seats. With the Congress boycotting the election, the contest was between the CPM and the BJP.

Voting took place at the P K Chathan Master Memorial School in Madayikonam from 9 am to 3 pm, after which the results were declared.

The election was conducted after a gap of 10 years. The bank, which had been governed by the CPM for several years, has been under an administrative committee since 2020. The committee was appointed after the previous governing body was dissolved following a complaint by the bank secretary and the registration of a police case over alleged irregularities and fraud.

The Karuvannur Cooperative Bank came under scrutiny after an alleged fraud, estimated at around ₹100 crore, was uncovered, triggering investigations by multiple agencies.

The bank has around 15,000 members, a majority of whom are considered CPM supporters. In the last election held in 2016, around 6,000 members cast their votes. This time, polling turnout was significantly lower, with about 3,000 members voting.

The CPM conducted an extensive campaign, treating the election as a crucial political and organisational test to retain control of the bank’s administration.
