With radar installation underway, Karipur Airport is set to become a safer and more technologically equipped aviation hub. Completion is expected in the coming months

Kondotty: A new advanced radar system is coming up at Calicut International Airport, Karipur for more security. The initial work of the project has begun under the leadership of the CNS(Communication, Navigation and Surveillance) Division.
The Airports Authority of India has decided to install radars at 20 airports across the country, including Karipur. The recommendation was made by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau following the 2020 Karipur air crash. Currently, Kochi and Mangalore are the only airports near Karipur that have radar.
Currently, air traffic control in Karipur relies on the ADS-B, Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast system. Through this, ATC, Air Traffic Control, controls the trajectory and landing by automatically evaluating the messages received from the aircraft. At the same time, the aircraft are visible on the radar and the flying height is also displayed. Speed and position will be accurately obtained in the radar, allowing aircraft to be closely monitored and accurate information to be provided to the pilot.
The radar will be installed in the old wireless station premises outside the airport. The existing building will be demolished and a new building will be constructed at a height of 130 meters. As part of the radar, two antennas, a Monophase Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR) and an Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR), will be installed on top of the building.
