Kalpetta: As Kerala enters a season conducive to Nipah virus transmission, the Health Department has issued a vigilance directive for the district. Antibodies against the Nipah virus have previously been detected in fruit bats in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Ernakulam and Idukki districts.
Preventive measures related to Nipah, along with a One Health approach to disease control, have been reinforced across all healthcare centres in the district.
District Medical Officer (DMO) Dr P Dinesh emphasised that scientific prevention of Nipah requires public participation and social awareness.
Precautionary measures:
- Avoid consuming fruits that have been partially eaten by birds or animals or have fallen to the ground.
- Wash fruits thoroughly before consumption.
- Do not consume toddy or similar beverages stored in open containers.
- Always wear gloves when handling fallen fruits, areca nuts or similar items.
- Use gloves when touching fruits or surfaces that may have been exposed to bats. If direct contact occurs, wash immediately with soap and water.
- Do not disturb or destroy bat habitats as this may agitate them and lead to increased secretion of bodily fluids.
