A unique highlight of the Kochi school pet show was Shekharan the elephant, whose charm captivated students and staff alike.

Kochi: A school pet show at Kaloor Greets Public School saw an unusual star this year, Kaliyarmadom Shekharan, a young elephant who captivated students, teachers and visitors alike. The elephant is part of the family, says Kochamman Vinayakan and his brothers Devanand Subramaniam and Rishik Brahma, who proudly described Shekhar as their “dearest boy”.
Kochamman, a ninth-grade student, has loved elephants since childhood. His father is a priest. Since there is a temple near his house, his love for elephants and spending time with them increased even more. With the support of his father, Subeesh T S, who shares the same passion for elephants, Shekharan has been a member of their family for the past six months. Devanand, in fourth grade and Rishik, in first grade, are all enthusiastic about Shekharan’s participation in the school event. Their mother, Sharanya, also supports the family’s close bond with the elephant.
During the pet show, while most students showcased dogs, cats and other small pets, Shekharan’s appearance created a wave of excitement. Children and teachers applauded enthusiastically, impressed by the elephant’s presence and charm.
The event featured students from kindergarten to Grade 12, who presented a variety of animals and participated in a pet walking competition, primarily with cats and dogs. Shekharan’s participation, however, made the occasion truly memorable, highlighting the unique bond between humans and animals in the city.
