Kozhikode: PMA Salam, the state general secretary of the Indian Union Muslim League, said the statements made by union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar and CPM state secretary MV Govindan following the Kalamassery blast were completely different.

“What Govindan Master said was that the blast may be an attempt to divert attention from support for Palestine. That is not what Rajeev said,” Salam told media persons.

When asked if the League supports Congress’ legal action against Govindan, Salam replied: “Congress may have such an opinion. The League feels that such matters should not be given unnecessary attention and shift focus from the grave statement of Rajeev.”

Salam criticised Rajeev Chandrasekhar and commended the Kerala government for taking legal action against him. Salam said the minister's statement was surprising, accusing him of needlessly casting suspicion on a particular section without any valid grounds, thereby fostering division among different communities.

He emphasised the need for responsible leaders to exercise restraint and avoid making inflammatory statements. "Instead of inciting tensions, leaders should work towards unity," he remarked. He praised the Kerala government for promptly addressing the issue and asserted that divisive tactics by political movements should be curbed.

He also condemned the custody of two youths in Kochi, who were the accused in the Panayikulam sedition case and acquitted by the Supreme Court, within hours of the blast in Kalamassery. Kerala police acted with bias, Salam alleged.
