Kozhikode: There has been an alarming rise in jaundice cases across Kerala, with 38 confirmed deaths reported over the past six months. Seven patients believed to have had jaundice have also died, though confirmation is pending. Official data revealed that 5,474 individuals have tested positive for jaundice during this period. Meanwhile, 10,201 suspected cases have sought medical attention.

The health crisis appears to be compounded by the presence of other infections, which are worsening patient outcomes.

According to statistics from the Health Department, jaundice has shown an upward trend in recent years. In 2023, there were 1,073 confirmed cases and 14 related deaths. Among 3,508 suspected cases that year, one death was reported. The situation escalated in 2024, with 7,967 confirmed cases and 89 deaths recorded. Out of 20,445 suspected cases, seven fatalities occurred.

By mid-2025, more than 5,400 people had already been confirmed to have the disease. Health authorities have attributed the spread primarily to contaminated water sources.

In April alone, 881 cases were confirmed, followed by 1,015 in May. As of last week of June, 767 people have been infected, with five deaths reported this month. On average, around 30 new cases are being detected daily.

Recent weeks have seen outbreaks in areas including Kizhakkoth, Kunduthode, Maruthonkara, and Vanimal in Kozhikode district.
