Kochi: In stark contrast to the subdued response of actor Siddique, president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), actor Jagadish, the association’s vice-president, has voiced serious concerns about acts of atrocity against women in the Malayalam film industry. Jagadish has called for immediate action based on the findings of the Hema Committee report.
Demanding a detailed investigation into the report, Jagadish emphasised that neither AMMA nor the producers' associations should absolve themselves of responsibility. Since the report's release, it has sparked a significant socio-political storm in the state.
Jagadish questioned why the 'predators' were not named in the 233-page report. He stated, "If female artists have reported that their doors were knocked during inappropriate hours on film sets, there should be no hesitation in thoroughly investigating such indecent acts. The culprits must be brought before the law. These are serious allegations and should not be dismissed as mere 'isolated' incidents."
Addressing the media, the actor dismissed the question of whether similar incidents have occurred in other workplaces as irrelevant, arguing that such questions are not suitable for a progressive society. He called on the government to provide an explanation for the missing five pages of the report, describing the omission as a significant issue that needs addressing.
The actor asserted that any discrepancies or misconduct within the film industry must be brought to light. He also highlighted that while the identities of victims should be protected, the names of perpetrators must be disclosed. According to Jagadish, it is the High Court that should take action on such matters, and AMMA will be ready to act against individuals identified by the court.
Jagadish defended the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), stating that their concerns are valid and should not be viewed as antagonistic.
Regarding the delays in the report, Jagadish apologised and acknowledged that AMMA's response was sluggish. He attributed the delay to the organisation’s upcoming show rehearsals but conceded that this was not a justifiable excuse for the lapse.
The Hema Committee report has become a focal point of controversy, raising critical issues regarding misconduct and harassment within the industry. Jagadish's call for clarity and accountability reflects a broader demand for transparency and justice in addressing these significant concerns.
