Sunni scholar Kanthapuram A P Abubacker Musliyar sought to clarify his controversial remarks on women's public roles, stating that Islam respects women and does not relegate them to second-class status.
Thrissur: Amidst the ongoing controversy regarding his statements on women entering public life, Sunni scholar Kanthapuram A P Abubacker Musliyar has issued a clarification, stating it is incorrect to allege that women are relegated to a secondary status.
Addressing a function in Thrissur, he claimed that his organisation does not hold the view that women should be buried or suppressed.

“It is wrong to say that women are given a second-class status. At Karanthur Markaz, we run educational institutions exclusively for girls. Over a thousand female students study there, and they are taught by women. I provide them with food, clothing and accommodation free of charge. We are not people who bury women, nor do we advocate doing so,” Kanthapuram said.
His earlier remarks, made during the Hubburrasool conference organised by the Kerala Muslim Jamaat in Kochi, had sparked intense debate. He had stated that women should lead modest lives at home and warned that their unrestrained entry into public life would lead to great ruin. He had maintained that restricting women from public platforms stemmed from a place of respect for them.
