Kasaragod: U.M. Abdurahman Maulavi, Vice President of Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama and General Secretary of Chattanchal Malabar Islamic Complex (MIC), passed away on Monday. He was 86.

Maulavi had been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Kasaragod for the past week.

Maulavi was born on 2 November 1939, son of Abdul Khadir and Khadeeja. After completing his school education, he pursued advanced Islamic studies during 1963–64. He taught and studied at several prominent institutions, including Parangipettai Juma Masjid and Ah Hariya College in Mangaluru, Karuvanthuruthi, Padanna Juma Masjid, Pazhayangadi Mosque in Kondotti, and Al-Baqiyat-us-Salihat (Arabic College)in Vellore.

He held several leadership roles in Islamic organisations over the years. In 1992, he became a member of the Samastha Kerala Jam'iyyathul Ulama's Central Mushawara. From 1991 onwards, he served as a member of the Samastha Kerala Islamic Education Board, a member of the Samastha Kasaragod District Mushawara, a member of the S.Y.S. State Council, General Secretary of Samastha Kasaragod District, and Chairman of SMF Manjeshwar Mandalam. Since 1974, he had also served as the General Secretary of Samastha Kasaragod Taluk.
