With Nimishapriya’s death penalty abolished, Kanthapuram stresses government action is key to securing her release

Kozhikode: Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar stated that he has briefed the central government on his efforts and the progress made toward securing the release of Nimisha Priya, who is currently detained in Yemen.
He emphasised that his actions were fully transparent and that he had no intention of circumventing government protocols or other official authorities.
“With the abolition of the death penalty, our part is complete. It is now up to the government to take the necessary steps, and I trust it will. The ultimate goal is to uphold humanity,” Kanthapuram told Risala Update in an interview.
He added that his intervention in Nimishapriya’s case was aimed at sending a message to the world that humanity should be valued irrespective of religion.
Nimisha Priya was sentenced to death for the 2017 murder of Yemeni citizen Talal Abdul Mahdi. Her release is possible only if Mahdi’s family grants forgiveness.
Her execution was postponed just hours before it was to be carried out, after Sufi scholars intervened. While the victim’s family had earlier insisted the death sentence should be enforced, Kanthapuram said they eventually yielded to the intervention.
Kanthapuram had earlier announced the postponement of the execution, and the official verdict was later shared on Facebook.
