Thrissur: Statistics reveal an increase in HIV infections among the youth in Kerala. In the year 2024–25, 14% of newly diagnosed cases fall within the 19 to 25 age group. Out of the 1,213 confirmed cases, 197 individuals belong to this age bracket. The highest number of infections have been reported from the districts of Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad.
According to observations by the AIDS Control Society, the rise in HIV cases among young people is mainly due to the use of drug-injecting syringes, contaminated tattoo needles, and unsafe sexual intercourse.
In response, an awareness campaign titled Comprehensive Health Security Through Youth (Yuvajagaran) is being intensified in higher secondary schools and colleges. The campaign is being conducted with the support of the National Service Scheme (NSS).
