Govindachami regains 18 kilos in four months after his failed prison-escape attempt and transfer to Viyyur High-Security Jail.

Kannur: Govindachami, the convict who proved he could lose weight and escape prison by eating only chapatis, has gained weight again after being transferred to another jail. In four months, he gained 18 kilograms, increasing from 55 to 73 kg.
Govindachami, who once weighed 74 kg, had reduced his weight to 55 kg over 10 months in preparation for his escape. His diet at the time consisted of just two chapatis and water each for lunch and dinner. After escaping from Kannur Central Jail, he was caught in a well at Thalapp, four kilometres away. He was then transferred to the high-security Viyyur Central Prison and placed in solitary confinement.
Convicted in a murder case, Govindachami first arrived at Kannur Central Jail on November 12, 2011, and he was caught on July 24 2024 while attempting to escape.
No parole, poor food and being fed up with prison life — these were the reasons Govindachami told the Crime Branch investigation team for his escape attempt.
The investigation is being led by Crime Branch SP T Madhusoodanan Nair. The Crime Branch team recorded his statement at Viyyur High-Security Prison. Prison officials say his words make it clear he has shown no signs of remorse.
