Kottayam: Garlic prices have surged once again in Kerala, with prices crossing Rs 440, up from Rs 380 just two months ago.
Currently, the wholesale price in the state ranges between Rs 380 and Rs 400. This is a sharp increase from six months ago, when prices were below Rs 250 per kilogram.
Traders attribute the price hike to a lower production in key garlic-producing states such as Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh compared to last year. These states are the primary suppliers of garlic to Kerala, and the Kota market in Rajasthan, one of the largest garlic markets, has reported a price of over Rs 360 per kilogram.
Production has declined due to a combination of adverse weather conditions, including heavy rains during the last harvest season followed by a prolonged hot spell.
Ooty garlic prices also on the rise
Garlic produced in the Ooty and Kodaikanal regions has seen prices rise significantly, reaching between Rs 400 and Rs 600 per kilogram. This rise presents a challenge for farmers who depend on these regions for hybrid garlic varieties typically used as seeds.
Most of the garlic from these regions is not sold directly to local markets; instead, it is transported from Mettupalayam to North India. Only a small percentage is sold locally. Despite the new crop beginning to be harvested, it will take approximately four and a half months for the garlic to reach full maturity.
Farmers and wholesalers are pessimistic about any immediate relief, with prices unlikely to drop until April.
