Despite academic setbacks, Kerala’s P K Sanoj overcame challenges through sports and determination to secure a role as Assistant Prison Officer in Thrissur.

Thrissur, Kerala: It was with a dream of joining a uniformed service that P K Sanoj from Mannampetta enrolled for pre-degree at Kerala Varma College. But fate was not on his side—he failed the course. Though he began life as an auto-rickshaw driver, he never let go of his dream.
He came to know that those who achieve notable success in sports could, through the Employment Exchange, temporarily secure jobs that require wearing a uniform.
Sanoj had athletic ability. So, his first effort was to participate in running events. He took part in the Masters Meet and went on to win gold medals at the state level in the 100m and 200m sprints. He also represented India in international Masters Athletics events held in Malaysia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka, winning accolades. He received help from local sponsors to participate in these international competitions.
Later, he shifted to Masters swimming events and won several medals. It was then that he received a notification from the Thrissur District Employment Exchange: recruitment for 19 posts of Assistant Prison Officer at the Thrissur Central Jail.
There were over a thousand candidates for the interview, but Sanoj was selected. He underwent four days of training.
He was appointed for 179 days, on a pay scale of ₹20,000–₹45,800. He served wearing the prison personnel uniform. On the 179th day, when his term ended, the Jail Superintendent gave him a certificate recognising his good service.
Sanoj also obtained a heavy vehicle driving licence and drove lorries for a while. His love for cinema led him to take up small roles. Friends encouraged him, saying he resembled actor Fahadh Faasil. Motivated by this, he began performing on stage shows in that get-up. He also acted in TV serials.
His daily routine includes farm work at home until 10 am, followed by heading to Thrissur with his auto-rickshaw. Upon returning home, he trains in running and swimming.
His wife, Vincy, works as a temporary employee in the Postal Department. Their children are Aleena, a nursing student, and Albert, a Plus One (Class 11) student.
