Changanassery: The centre and state governments have come up with different schemes for the public to ensure food security during the lockdown period.
The free rice allotted by the central government will be distributed to 1.54 crore people belonging to priority category through ration shops in Kerala. Also 60,000 food kits will be given to migrant labourers.
Migrant workers' kit
The kit distributed to migrant workers includes 5 kilogram rice, 2 kilogram wheat flour, 2 kilogram chickpea, 1 kilogram onion and 1 kilogram potato. These kits will be supplied with the help of labour department and local self governance department.
Children's kit
The kit for school students is ready for distribution at Supplyco outlets. They will be brought to schools shortly. The children were already given 25 kilogram rice. The kits contain chickpea, kidney beans, sugar, chilli powder, Bengal gram and black gram.
Free kit for all
The state government will distribute free food kit to all ration cardholders in May. The kit contains 12 items. Supplyco is preparing 86 lakh food kits.
Rice from centre
Five kilogram rice is given for free to each person belonging to priority category as per Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY). The Centre handed over to Kerala 70,000 metric tonnes of rice which is to be distributed in May and June.
