Thiruvananthapuram: Dramatic scenes unfurled at General Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram as the youth congress leader, an accused in AKG Centre attack, and a CPM leader were admitted to adjacent beds. As CPM and Congress workers gathered at the hospital, fearing clash between the two groups, police intervened shifting the youth congress leader to Medical College Hospital.
As Suhail Shajahan, the accused in AKG Centre attack case, was produced before the court on Friday, he said that he had chest pain and needed medical attention. Following this, Judicial First Class Magistrate asked police to take him to general hospital for a medical check up. He was put under police surveillance in the hospital during the check up. Meanwhile, IP Binu, CPM leader and former councilor of Thiruvananthapuram corporation also had reached there with chest pain.
On hearing about this, both CPM and Congress workers gathered in front of the hospital. There was also a talk about the possibility of an attack against Suhail in the hospital. As tension escalated, Chandy Oommen MLA too reached the place, which further aggravated the situation forcing more police to reach the hospital.
As the situation continued to be tense, police decided to shift Suhail from the hospital. He was in the custody of the crime branch for a day in connection with the AKG Centre attack case. The investigation team had taken him to Kazhakkoottam and Venpalavattam as part of collection of evidence.
Suhail Shahjahan had filed a bail petition in the court which was challenged by prosecutor Kallampally Manu saying if bail is granted, he would flee from the country. Prosecutor argued that there are 11 cases filed against Suhail. But, Mridul John Mathew, defense counsel, argued that the cases against Suhail were in connection with participating in various agitations which could be settled through paying fines. The defense argued that the accused's imprisonment was unnecessary in the case where the investigation was completed and the charge sheet was filed. The bail application will be considered on Saturday.
