It was MT Vasudevan Nair who once wrote, “years please, step aside for a while, let me see the ossuary of memories…” But the years never did step aside, just as M.T. has never stepped away from the hearts of Malayalis, not for a single moment. Through his writings, his words, and his timeless films, M.T. continues to live in the minds of generations.

Tuesday marks his first birthday since his passing. MT Vasudevan Nair was born on July 15, 1933. In his lifetime, his birthdays were never celebrated with any grandeur; often, the day would pass quietly. Even the Piranal Sadya (grand birthday feast) was enjoyed with the Uthrittathi star in the Malayalam month of Karkidakam. It was only when he turned 90 that this changed, his milestone birthday was commemorated with celebrations that lasted until his occurrence of his birth star in the Malayalam month.

This year, to honour his memory, Mathrubhumi is offering a special tribute on his birth anniversary. Titled “M.T — Footprints of Time,” a new book capturing rare glimpses of the legendary writer’s life will be released on Tuesday. The book, published by Mathrubhumi Books, has been compiled by Mathrubhumi Chief Photographer KK Santhosh, who walked alongside MT for decades, capturing invaluable moments through his lens.

The book vividly traces three decades of M.T.’s life through photographs — revealing his many eras, beloved places, friendships, his writing, and his journey in cinema. It even captures the rare expressions that would fleetingly cross his face, including that elusive smile.

The function will be held on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the K.P. Kesava Menon Hall. Mathrubhumi Chairman and Managing Editor P.V. Chandran will preside over the function. The book will be officially released by noted lyricist K Jayakumar, who will present the first copy to MT's daughter Aswathy V Nair.
