Thiruvananthapuram: A recommendation has been made to impose a hefty fine on those who smuggle liquor from Mahe to Kerala. If caught, the offender will have to pay a proportionate tax in tally with the Kerala rates, in addition to the fine.
The recommendation was made in a report submitted by the Administrative Reforms Commission. The finance department will look into the matter and make decisions accordingly.
At present, bringing liquor from Mahe to Kerala is deemed illegal. If caught, the offender will have to either pay a fine or undergo imprisonment or will have to suffer both punishments.
Other recommendations
- Excise department officials should be authorized to catch hold of those who drive in an inebriated condition. Lockups in range and circle offices should be set up for the same. Rules for collecting phone details of the offenders should be formulated.
- Set up vehicle scanners in all the major checkposts
- Set up an excise ministerial department
- Conduct inspections at toddy shops every two weeks
