Kannur: Every land has its own variety of liquor and Kerala’s toddy is one among those, said chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

He was inaugurating the open forum of the ‘district development seminar’ jointly organised by Pattiam Gopalan Memorial Research Centre and Kannur District Library Council here.

Pinarayi said that if served properly, freshly-tapped toddy (Ilam Kallu) is nutritious. He said an individual asked him why can’t the state export toddy like Sri Lanka does.

He was responding to the criticism of the new liquor policy, recently approved by the state cabinet.

Making freshly tapped toddy available in resorts and hotels of tourist centres is part of the new policy, he said.

Previously, LDF convener EP Jayarajan had also made similar remarks. He said that as agricultural products of Kerala, measures should be taken to use Neera and toddy properly.
