Thiruvananthapuram: About 85 lakh driving licenses in the state are going to be added in the nation-wide driving license database 'Sarathi'. About 80 percent of data exchange has been complete. Only the data of the licenses in Palakkad, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts are pending. These procedures will be completed within two weeks.
The driving licenses uploaded in Sarathi can be renewed in any state in India. The Keralites residing in other states can renew the licenses at the place they are living in. All services available in Kerala will be available in other states too.
The condition that the application should be filed in the same office where the license was issued will not exist from now on. Even people in foreign countries can renew license via online. The migrant labourers in Kerala also can renew their driving license from here.
Earlier, licenses were issued on different serial numbers in each office of the Motor Vehicle Department. A unified number system came into force replacing this. The data related to licenses will be available online anywhere in the country. If the motor vehicle act in other states are violated, the fine will be issued via online.
The police and motor vehicle department officials of all states have the right to issue check report in Sarathi. No other services will be available unless the fine is paid. Fine can be remitted via online in any state. Earlier, the details of vehicles were completely changed to a software called 'Vahan'.
License numbers to be 15 digits
The first two digits of the license is the code of the state. The next two digits are office code. Then the year in which the license was issued is indicated with the next four digits. Seven digits following this is the number of the license. At present, only four digits are used maximum. Zeroes are added in the beginning to make it seven digits.
