Thiruvananthapuram: In a major development, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) plans to conduct a comprehensive study in relation to the Thiruvananthapuram metro rail project.

The new study includes topographical survey, utility survey, traffic forecast, road network system, metro mode selection, civil engineering, inter-modal transport integration, technical sector, environmental impact and economic survey.

Based on the studies, DMRC will prepare and submit the Detailed Project Report (DPR). Last month, the authorities also started a field survey in Thiruvananthapuram.

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is assigned to implement the metro project in the state capital. However, KMRL has sought DMRC's expertise to prepare the DPR.

In 2018, DMRC conducted a study for the Thiruvananthapuram Metro project and estimated the cost at Rs 4219 crore. The study report recommended a route from Pallipuram to Kaimanam in the first phase and from Kaimanam to Neyyattinkara in the second phase. KMRL was assigned to implement the project. The plan is to adopt a medium-model rail system similar to Kochi Metro in Thiruvananthapuram.  However, the final decision will be taken after DMRL submits the study report.
