The state government is planning to ban diesel engine auto rickshaws that are older than 15 years. According to reports, the Kerala Motor Vehicle Act has been amended banning old auto rickshaws after January 1, 2021.
The new law will be applicable for auto rickshaws which are used for public transport. It is hinted that those used for private purposes will be exempted. The action is initiated in order to promote nature-friendly vehicles.
If the diesel engine autos older than 15 years are converted to electric, CNG, LPG and LNG versions, they can be used further. The National Green Tribunal also has directed on banning vehicles older than 15 years.
As per the electric vehicle policy of Kerala, vehicles which use renewable energy sources should be encouraged so as to reduce air pollution. So, there are plans to increase the number of vehicles using CNG, LPG and electric power.
