Thiruvananthapuram: Within hours after asserting before the media that someone from Congress stalwart Oommen Chandy’s family would replace the late leader as the party candidate in Puthupally constituency, KPCC President K Sudhakaran reversed his stand and stated that he meant something else.
In a press release, Sudhakaran said, “I did not say the candidate would be from Oommen Chandy’s family. I meant we would discuss it with his family. I had said that there would be no quarrel in the party over choosing the candidate.”

Earlier on Sunday, Sudhakaran had told the media in Kochi that unofficial discussions had begun in the Congress party on who should be the candidate and official talks would start within a couple of days. However, the leader stated in the press note that no such discussions were held and requested the media to refrain from “spreading such misleading news.”
He had earlier said that the family would decide who would run for the bypoll.
It is learnt that some leaders expressed displeasure over Sudhakaran’s comments on the candidature, ahead of official talks within the party. They also pointed out that the matter was not discussed with the central leadership. Following that, Sudhakaran changed his stance.
Oommen Chandy, who served as chief minister of Kerala twice, breathed his last in a private hospital in Bengaluru on July 18. His end came while undergoing treatment for cancer.
