Thiruvananthapuram: There is growing discontent within the UDF over the indefinite delay in appointments to various boards and corporations in the state. More than 100 days after the government assumed office, several key posts are still occupied by those appointed by the previous Left government. Vacancies, including those in the PSC, have also not been filled. Against this backdrop, UDF discussions on appointments to the Women’s Commission, Youth Commission and Youth Welfare Board have become active again.

Congress leaders Deepti Mary Varghese and Aisha Potty are reportedly the main contenders for the post of Women’s Commission chairperson. Deepti Mary Varghese was considered until the final stage for a seat in the last Assembly election but was denied a ticket. Aisha Potty joined the Congress ahead of the Assembly election and contested after a strong campaign, but was defeated.

Shajir, a DYFI leader appointed by the previous government, continues as the chairperson of the Youth Commission. Since the post carries judicial powers, he has taken the position that he will not step down until a replacement is appointed. For positions in the Youth Commission and Youth Welfare Board, the names reportedly under consideration include Jomon Jose, former state organising general secretary of the Youth Congress from Kasaragod, Riyas Mukkoli, Vijay Induchoodan and J.S. Akhil.

As some of those being considered could also be considered for the posts of DCC president and vice-president in the upcoming DCC reorganisation, the UDF is planning to announce all the appointments as a single package. Discussions on the appointments have become active again after a brief pause.
