Kozhikode: As Nipah fear grips the district, let's take a look at how the supposed index patient, Muhammad Ali was identified. Initially, his death did not raise suspicion because he sought treatment for fever but had already been diagnosed with liver disease. Thus, no saliva test was done upon his death.

However, when Muhammed Ali’s wife, son, brother-in-law, and his baby arrived at the pediatric ward of MIMS hospital, a possibility of Nipah took root. The doctors received information from them that a person had died in their home two weeks ago and also that he spoke incoherently before his death.

Since the family presented with pneumonia-like symptoms and one child showed epileptic signs, their family cluster was identified. This information was immediately reported to the Health Minister and the samples were sent for testing.

At the same time, a patient named Harris sought treatment for pneumonia in Vadakara and died suddenly. When a healthy young man died in this manner, his information was collected by the health authorities. The first question raised was whether he was related to the index patient Muhammed Ali but no link was found.

During the subsequent investigation, it was learned that Harris had gone to a private hospital with a relative. Muhammed Ali had also sought treatment at this hospital at the same time. With this, the body was not released to the family and a complete examination of Harris’ body was carried out. His burial was held at 10 PM on Tuesday.
