Kannur: When the cyclone struck the state, one lakh electricity consumers were left without power. Data from the past ten days indicates that 1,00,114 electricity connections are still awaiting restoration, with over half of these disruptions occurring in North Malabar. In the districts of Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, a total of 56,515 connections were affected. The loss amounts to Rs 54.40 crore.

The most severely impacted area by the monsoon disaster was the Sreekandapuram area in Kannur district, including hilly regions. Here, 31,371 connections still need restoration. This data covers the period from July 17 to 26. Additionally, 167 transformers were damaged. In the Kannur circle, 17,395 connections are being restored, with 39 transformers out of order. Under the Shoranur circle, 17,559 connections need restoration, and in Nilambur, 16,598 connections are awaiting repairs. These areas have 60 and 83 transformers, respectively, requiring repairs.

In contrast, the circles of Kottakkal, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Perumbavoor, and Tirur did not experience any disruptions. The additional loss in Kannur district amounts to Rs 11.18 crore, while in Kasaragod, the loss stands at Rs 5.54 crore. A setback has been the difficulty in obtaining wires to replace fallen lines in many sections.  

Loss faced from July 17 to 26

  • Lines have fallen in 20,688 places (19,571 low tension lines, 1,117 high tension lines)
  • 12,530 poles have cracked (L.T.- 10,836, 1,694- H.T.)  
  • 15 transformers have burned out.  
  • The loss over the 10-day period is Rs 54.40 crore.
