Thiruvananthapuram: Electricity minister K Krishnankutty has informed that the curbs imposed on power supply in Kerala during night hours will continue only for two days. The minister added that the government has found an alternative solution to address the present crisis due to coal shortage.
At present, Kerala is facing a shortage of 200 MW. If power cut is imposed for 15 minutes, this shortage will be solved. KSEB has signed an agreement with a firm in Andhra Pradesh to ensure supply of more power in the state. In order to solve the crisis, Kozhikode Diesel Power Plant will be utilised as an emergency measure, informed the minister.
KSEB urged the consumers to cooperate with the curbs and save electricity by switching off atleast 3 switches.
KSEB has imposed power cut in the state on Thursday. The power outage is scheduled for 15 minutes between 6.30 pm and 11.30 pm. Cities, hospitals and essential services are excluded from the power cut.
At present, 14 states have imposed power outage for more than one hour.
The total electricity shortage in the country has hit 623 million units, surpassing the total shortage in March.
At the heart of the crisis are low inventories of coal -- the fossil fuel that produces 70 per cent of India's electricity. While the government insists that there is enough coal available to meet the demand, the reduced availability of railway rakes to transport coal has led to coal inventories being at the lowest pre-summer levels in at least nine years. Also, with international energy prices shooting up following the war in Ukraine, coal imports have dipped.
