Thiruvananthapuram: The government and the CPM have launched a counter attack to defend the opposition's allegations about the artificial intelligence-enabled surveillance camera project of the motor vehicles department. It released documents stating Keltron had similarly awarded subcontracts for surveillance camera installation during the previous UDF government.
In 2012, during Oommen Chandy's tenure as chief minister, Keltron subcontracted the implementation of surveillance cameras to detect speed violations. Keltron subcontracted the project to two private companies- Mediatronix and RP Techsoft International. Mediatronix is involved in the AI camera contract as well.

A total of 100 cameras were installed in the Rs 40.31 crore project. The camera had a three-year warranty, and the agreement under BOOT (build–own–operate–transfer) mode required transferring the amount within 12 months. The Safe Kerala scheme under which AI cameras are installed has also been implemented following the same norms.
However, industries minister P Rajeev had stated that the party or the government had no complaint that the project during the Oommen Chandy government was corrupted. He said the AI camera project also followed the same procedure.
