Thiruvananthapuram: The CPM Politburo will prepare a guideline to learn from the setback in the Lok Sabha elections in Kerala. Based on these guidelines, the State committee will formulate a report for course correction of the party factions from the top level to the branch level. The guidelines will include suggestions to restore people-to-people relations by ensuring Communist values.
The party's performance in the elections, especially in Kerala, caused severe disappointment, so the central committee meeting tasked the politburo to prepare a roadmap to steer the party on the right path.
Central committee’s review will be discussed by the State secretariat this week. Four regional meetings in which CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury and Politburo member Prakash Karat will participate along with others will be held this month. Central leaders will explain the lessons to be learned from the election and the things the party needs to correct. A detailed rectification report will be prepared by the State leadership, ensuring ideological clarity. Party and the functioning of the government will be the main content of the report.
The criticism raised by the central committee against the Kerala unit was that it did not conduct the election review with a class approach in the Marxian manner. There was no assessment of the interest and support of the workers, farmers and agricultural labourers. Instead, a review was conducted based on the stand taken by religious and communal groups, which is a symptom of identity politics, it pointed out. The state leadership will have to include this criticism into their election review.
With the beginning of the branch meetings in September, the CPM will start the party congress. In this situation, trials of issues like election backlash, continued term, approach of leaders including the Chief Minister, and leadership drifting away from the people will be tried in the party meetings. In this way, the sentiments in the meetings will also be taken into account for the party's rectification.
