Kochi: V4 Kochi leader Nipun Cherian was sentenced to four months in jail and fined Rs 2,000 in a contempt of court case filed over a remark against a sitting High Court judge.
The High Court had taken a suo motu contempt proceedings against Nipun for issuing remarks against Justice N Nagaresh through social media. While pronouncing its verdict, the High Court pointed out that the punishment is given as an opportunity for the accused to amend the mistake.

High Court Division Bench, comprising Justices AK Jayasankaran Nambiar and Muhammad Niyas, pronounced the verdict after dismissing the request for the defendant to stay the execution of the sentence.
The court initiated a suo motu contempt proceedings for a remark made by Nipun during a speech before farmers, fishermen and others in Chellanam. Nipun levelled allegations of corruption against Justice N Nagaresh, a sitting judge of the High Court. Later, the speech was shared on the Facebook page of V4 Kochi. Following this, the court took a criminal contempt case against him.
Further, Nipun also refused to issue an apology in court. There were also disagreements with court officials, including security and staff of the registrar's office, after the court refused to allow Nipun to attend contempt proceedings alongside his fellow party workers. Previously, the court warned Nipun that the judiciary does not have time for incidents like this.
