Kozhikode: Consumerfed under the cooperative department is set to organise the ‘cooperative Onam market’ from August 19 to 28, announced Consumerfed chairman M Mehboob in a press conference. Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the market on August 20 at 11 am in Kochi. Cooperative minister VN Vasavan will preside over the occasion.
There will be 1500 Onam markets across the state including Triveni stores. The Onam market will offer 13 essential daily-use items at subsidised rates. Additionally, non-subsidised items will be available at prices 10 to 40 per cent lower than those in the general market. A noteworthy feature of the event is the provision of all the necessary ingredients, including vegetables, under one roof to facilitate the preparation of Onasadya, a traditional feast. To manage crowds effectively, booking and specific shopping timings will be facilitated through SMS notifications.
The subsidised items include Andhra Jaya rice, Kuruva rice, Matta rice, Raw rice (Pachari), sugar, urad dal, green gram (cherupayar), chickpeas (black kadala), toor dal, red cowpeas (vanpayar), chilli, coriander and coconut oil. These products will be available to ration cardholders. The cooperative department aims to achieve sales worth Rs 200 crore during the event, with Rs 100 crore worth of products being subsidised.
