Kozhikode: Due to the absence of actual SSLC exam scores, the Directorate of Vocational Higher Secondary Education has implemented a system where grade-based marks are assigned to SSLC candidates applying for ITI admissions. As a result, the decision regarding the awarding of marks is at the discretion of the authorities.

This approach is necessary because SSLC marks are no longer published along with grades.

Under this system, an A-plus grade is equal to 95 'imaginary' marks, A to 85, B-plus to 75, and B to 65.

Earlier, SSLC grades were accompanied by actual marks, allowing for precise calculation of index marks based on the scores achieved by students. The admission process also included provisions for grace marks. The index mark used to be computed by multiplying the marks received by 300 and dividing by 360, covering subjects like English (1st and 2nd papers), Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (1st and 2nd papers).

Since actual marks are no longer available, the department is relying on providing imaginary marks to those falling under a particular grade. The issue has received limited complaints as fewer students pursue admission to vocational training courses compared to the Plus One course.
