Payyanur, Kerala: Indian Railways is set to introduce fried chicken outlets at select railway stations as part of a wider commercial diversification drive aimed at increasing non-ticket revenue and enhancing passenger amenities.

In the first phase, global food brands will begin operations at eight stations. Shoranur, Tirur, Kozhikode, Vadakara, Thalassery, Kannur, Kanhangad stations in Kerala and Mangaluru Central in Karnataka.

Railways are increasingly turning stations into commercial hubs by introducing a range of businesses and services aimed at improving passenger convenience while generating additional income.

As part of the diversification drive, ATM facilities have already been installed at 18 railway stations, including Kannur.

Other upcoming commercial ventures at stations include ice cream parlours, grocery shops, footwear stores, gift shops, mobile phone outlets and beauty parlours.

Meanwhile, a railway coach restaurant is also set to come up in Kozhikode, following similar projects at Payyanur and Palakkad Town railway stations.

Tender procedures for the Kozhikode coach restaurant have already begun. The concept involves converting old railway coaches into themed dining spaces.

The Payyanur project, being developed at an estimated cost of around ₹40 lakh, is nearing completion.
