Mananthavady: Police have registered a case against the doctor and nursing staff of Wayanad Government Medical College Hospital after two pieces of cloth were reportedly recovered from the body of a woman two months after childbirth.

The case has been registered against Dr Maunika and the nurses who were on duty during the delivery, following a complaint from Devi (21) of Pandikkadavu, Mananthavady.

According to the complaint, the woman underwent a normal delivery at Wayanad Government Medical College Hospital on October 20 and was discharged on October 23. After returning home, she continued to suffer from severe stomach pain and other health issues. Though she visited the hospital twice, she alleged that she was not properly examined and was only advised to drink more water.

On December 28, a piece of cloth reportedly came out of her body. She returned to the hospital the next day, after which scanning and further examinations were conducted.

The police team, led by Mananthavady Sub Inspector Pavanan M C, visited the woman’s house, collected her statement and took into custody one of the cloth pieces recovered from her body. Another piece had earlier been handed over to a Health Department team for examination.

The case alleges that negligence during delivery care posed a threat to the woman’s life. The Health Department had already begun an inquiry based on a complaint submitted to Minister O R Kelu. An initial probe was conducted by the District Medical Officer, followed by another inquiry led by Assistant Director of Health Services Dr Veena Saroji. However, further action on the report is still pending.
