Thiruvananthapuram: A 10-year-old boy has tested positive for cholera, with 10 others under observation at the state-run Medical College hospital in Kerala's capital, Thiruvananthapuram. The case was reported from an orphanage on the outskirts of Neyyattinkara.
The outbreak was first highlighted by the tragic death of 26-year-old Anu, who succumbed to severe vomiting and diarrhoea last week. Following this, several other inmates began exhibiting similar symptoms, prompting swift intervention by health officials who conducted tests.
Confirming the diagnosis, a 10-year-old child has been identified as positive for cholera and is currently undergoing treatment, alongside others who are experiencing similar symptoms.
Addressing concerns about the outbreak, a lady officer from the orphanage emphasised that they do not receive meals from outside sources.
"The health authorities have tested the water that we use and there are no issues with it. Hence, we are concerned about the source. We keep the place clean also," said the female official.
In response to the incident, school authorities have advised parents of 65 students currently residing in the hostel to take their children home. Officials from the Health and Food Safety Departments have visited the hostel to assess the situation.
Notably, this marks the first cholera-related death in the state in seven years, with 11 suspected and 9 confirmed cases reported this year. Poor sanitation and contaminated water sources are attributed to this surge.
While cholera is no longer a major public health concern, prompt precautions are essential. These include ensuring treated or boiled drinking water, practicing hand hygiene, avoiding undercooked food, proper waste disposal, and seeking immediate medical attention for symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, or dehydration.
