Kochi: After spending a term marred by controversies, Ajitha Thankappan has tendered her resignation as Thrikkakara municipality chairperson on Monday. 

Earlier today, she arrived at the Municipality office and handed the resignation letter to the local body secretary. As per the report, Ernakulam DCC demanded her resignation following a rift between Congress groups in Thrikkakara.

As per the deal struck by Congress 'A' and 'I' groups, Ajitha, a leader of 'I' group, will hold the office as chairperson for the first two years before stepping aside for Radhamani Pillai, the leader of 'A' group.

However, accusing Radhamani of anti-party activities, Ajitha refused to step down at the end of her tenure on June 27. Following this, DCC intervened and asked her to step down from the office.

Of 43 councillors in the council, a candidate needs 22 votes to ensure win. UDF, which has 21 councillors, ruled the local body with the support of five independent councillors. However, LDF has reportedly earned the support of five independent councillors.
