Thiruvananthapuram: The Union government has issued a stern warning to states regarding the usage of fake high-security number plates on vehicles. The state government entities are strongly advised to intensify their inspection in order to  detect and take action on such fraudulent activities.

As per the existing rules, high-security number plates should only be sold through outlets of various vehicle manufacturing companies or authorized agencies. However, it has now come to light that the number plates are illegally sold by parties claiming to be authorised dealers.

Further, the centre has also directed concerned parties to cancel sub-contracts issued to authorized agencies to manufacture number plates.

At present, the showrooms deliver number plates to owners at the time of registration of new vehicles. A holographic sticker containing the serial numbers of the number plates and the vehicle's registration information will be affixed to the windshield of the vehicle.

Earlier, the Centre Government identified that private parties are selling high-security number plates without examining the vehicle's registration details.
