Charummoodu (Alappuzha): An amount of ₹4,52,207 was recovered from the bag of a beggar who died after being hit by a scooter in Charummoodu. The man, who used to beg in and around the Charummoodu area, met with the accident on Monday evening.

Local residents rushed him to a nearby hospital after the scooter knocked him down. Hospital records list his address as Anil Kishore, Thaiparambil, Kayamkulam. Doctors advised him to seek specialised treatment for a head injury, but he left the hospital by night.

He was found dead on Tuesday morning in a roadside ditch within Charummoodu town limits. The body was later shifted to Alappuzha Medical College by the Nooranad police.

When the bags recovered from the spot were taken to the police station and examined, officers found plastic tins and purses containing currency notes. Following this, Philip Oommen, a panchayat member from Charummoodu, was called to the station.

The collection included 12 notes of ₹2,000 and some Saudi riyals. The currency was stored in five plastic tins, sealed with cellophane tape, and placed inside a bag.
