Kumily: A bullock cart race held here as a part of the promotion of the Nava Kerala Sadas turned haywire when the bulls rushed into the crowd gathered. A major tragedy was averted because people darted away from danger. The incident happened on Friday at 10 AM.
Six bullock carts from Tamil Nadu participated in the event that began from 1st mile in Kumily. When the carts reached the town circle, the bulls tied to three carts rushed towards the people. Three vehicles parked on the road were damaged. The competition was organised by the CPM despite the Supreme Court’s order that bulls should not be used for entertainment and competitive training.
Idukki district collector Sheeba George told ‘Mathrubhumi’ that the program was held without the knowledge of the district administration. The organisers had reportedly informed the police about the race. It is also alleged that the police facilitated the illegal event and made no attempts to stop it. The Sadas will begin in Idukki on Sunday.
