Thiruvananthapuram: Senior police officer ADGP M.R. Ajith Kumar is likely to face disciplinary action over allegations that he interfered in altering the case diary and investigation report in the assault case involving KSU and Youth Congress workers during former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's Nava Kerala Yatra.

According to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report, Ajith Kumar, who was in charge of law and order at the time, intervened to derail the investigation. The report includes statements claiming that investigating officers were summoned to Thiruvananthapuram and directed to alter the case diary.

The SIT, led by SP Shoukkathali, submitted its report to State Police Chief Ravada Chandrasekhar on June 23. However, the report has not yet been forwarded to the Home Department. It is learnt that it will be submitted next week.

State Police Chief Ravada Chandrasekhar has also sought legal opinion on the SIT report, which reportedly recommends action against Ajith Kumar. The legal advice is understood to relate to the nature of the action that can be taken.

Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has favoured action against the officer rather than protecting him. However, the Home Minister's position also appears to be that there is no need to call for the report.

A section of the Congress, including MP K.C. Venugopal, is reportedly unhappy over the delay in initiating action against the ADGP. It is alleged that the delay is intended to help Ajith Kumar secure promotion as the next Director General of Police (DGP).

Director General of Fire and Rescue Services Nitin Agrawal is due to retire on July 31, after which Ajith Kumar is expected to be considered for promotion as DGP. However, any disciplinary action against him before then could jeopardise his chances of securing the top police post.

Apart from the alleged cover-up in the Nava Kerala Yatra assault case, the Congress has also raised allegations against Ajith Kumar over the Thrissur Pooram controversy and his reported meetings with RSS leaders.

Ajith Kumar is currently serving as the Managing Director of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation (BEVCO).
