Chennai: Following age-related ailments, Babu Rajendra Prasad Bhaskar better known as BRP Bhaskar breathed his last on Tuesday morning here.
Born in 1933 in Kayikkara, Thiruvananthapuram, BRP dedicated his life to the pursuit of unbiased journalism. In his long and illustrious career, he has served as the editor of various leading national newspapers like The Hindu, The Statesman and Deccan Herald.
His father, the late A.K Bhaskar was also a social activist and publisher of ‘Navabharatham’. Acquiring an interest in journalism at a young age, BRP joined the Hindu in 1952 at the age of 19. He went on to work with various big names in the media industry and reporting all the major epochs in Indian history during his lifetime.
After working in Asianet TV from 1994-99, BRP spent his time writing and engaging in independent journalism. He continued to write columns until his health started failing.
BRP was awarded the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for his biography titled ‘NewsRoom’. Throughout his life,he was a staunch and vocal advocate of human rights and ethics in journalism.
The details of the funeral are yet to be released. He is mourned by the entire media community.
